In today’s high-velocity world

leaders are often tempted to control chaos, streamline processes and reduce uncertainty. Yet, management professor and jazz pianist Frank Barrett reminds us that real leadership begins when we embrace the mess (Harvard Business review, Bates & Saini, 2012).

Instead of waiting for clarity, leaders must develop an improvisational mindset and the courage to leap into action with incomplete information, trusting that creativity and innovation will emerge. Just as jazz musicians say “yes, and” to each other’s notes, leaders can cultivate environments where team members feel empowered to contribute, experiment, and take risks (Havard Business review,Bates & Saini, 2012).

Much of the challenge leaders face today comes from talent acquisition, finding the right people and determining how to meaningfully measure team output. Traditional metrics often fall short in capturing creativity, collaboration and adaptability. That’s why the ability to look beyond one’s immediate work sphere becomes essential. True leadership requires reaching across functions, industries, and networks to collaborate with others whose perspectives may differ from our own. This cross-boundary partnership is where the breakthroughs happen. Just as a jazz band cannot thrive if each musician plays in isolation, organizations unlock their greatest potential when diverse voices come together, experiment, and build on one another’s strengths. When this alignment occurs, that’s when the real magic of the organizational ‘music’ begins to play.

The essence of “Yes to the Mess” is that progress does not come from perfect plans, but from improvisation, collaboration, and radical receptivity. Leaders who practice this unlock not only solutions but possibilities they could never have imagined.

I will be sharing more to the accepting the yes to the Mess as I walk down the leadership lane where

Where it is full of learning and support that comes from different place, if leadership is lonely in your lane, then maybe you have a lot of Mess that needs you to say Yes to and I would be happy to help you do this so that you can lead your team with clarity.
